Over the past couple years, I have attempted to send emails from my Windstream email account on my iPhone with no luck. I have tried to do this using the IOS native mail client, but also with many third party email clients from the App Store. One of a couple things usually happened:
- I was unable to configure the server and login settings to actually get the app to connect to Windstream’s mail servers.
- I was able to configure the server and login settings but could only send email when I was connected to the Windstream network through my wireless router.
- I was able to configure the server and login settings, send email over Verizon’s mobile network, but then my Windstream email account would be locked out.
After finally having enough of this, I called Windstream and explained my situation. Of course they thought it to be a Verizon issue (Verizon does block port 25 for non-verizon email addresses), but I insisted it was not Verizon who locked out my account. The level 1 CSR finally connected me with a level 2 CSR and we were able to identify and correct the issue.
Windstream has three settings for email addresses which allows or prevents emails from being sent through their SMTP servers while connected to other networks. Those settings are:
- Whitelisted
- Neutral
- Blacklisted
The default setting is neutral, but quickly changes to blacklisted if you send email over Windstream’s SMTP while on another network such as Verizon Wireless. This is why my email account would get locked out. The level 2 CSR at Windstream kindly changed the status of my account from Blacklisted to Whitelisted and I have happily sent emails from my iPhone connected to Verizon Wireless ever since (it’s only been a day).
My settings are:
IMAP HOSTNAME: imap.windstream.net:993 – SSL on
SMTP HOSTNAME: smtp.windstream.net:465 – SSL on
